DISCOVER FREIBURG IM BREISGAU
Start with the Münster and the old town
Freiburg im Breisgau is also called Fribourg-en-Brisgau in French. These names refer to the same German city. When planning your journey, make sure you do not confuse it with Fribourg in Switzerland.
The Münster is a useful landmark to start your visit. Its 116-metre tower rises above the city. First get closer to admire the architecture, then check access arrangements if you want to visit the interior or climb the tower: these are separate experiences to plan.
Our suggestion: do not overfill the start of your day. Spend time around the cathedral first, then choose a direction to continue on foot. Leaving room for spontaneous discoveries makes the city more enjoyable.
PRACTICAL POINTERS
Enjoy the surroundings,
at your own pace.
Advice to help you plan your day and choose what suits you.
01 · PLAN
Follow the narrow streets and the Bächle
The Bächle are the small channels running along several streets in the historic centre. They are details to notice as you walk, alongside the façades and squares. Watch your step and be mindful of other pedestrians.
Plan a loop rather than retracing your steps repeatedly. If travelling with others, agree on an easy-to-find meeting point before splitting up for free time. Leave room for a meal, a drink or simply enjoying the atmosphere.
02 · PREPARE
Continue to the Schlossberg if time allows
The Schlossberg offers views from above Freiburg. Kanonenplatz is one of the viewpoints highlighted by the tourist office. This walk can complement a day dedicated to the city.
Decide on the day according to the weather, your energy and your return time. There is no need to add a viewpoint at all costs: a relaxed visit to the centre is already a worthwhile plan. The Schlossberg is not advertised as an included stop on the Abnoba tour.
03 · EXPLORE
A full day in Freiburg or one stop on a tour?
A full day lets you set your own pace and spend longer at places you enjoy. A tour stop provides a more concentrated introduction. Abnoba’s itinerary allows around 2½ hours in Freiburg, including about an hour’s guided walk through the historic centre followed by free time.
Daniel introduces the sights and adapts the walking pace to the group. He explains that he organises two pace groups when some travellers walk more slowly. Participants must nevertheless be able to get around independently throughout the day.
This stop complements Triberg and Lake Titisee. If your priority is a museum, a lengthy indoor visit or a hike around Freiburg, plan a longer stay or a dedicated independent day.

Your questions before you travel
Are Freiburg and Fribourg-en-Brisgau the same place?
Yes. Freiburg im Breisgau is the German name; Fribourg-en-Brisgau is the French name for the same city.
Can you see Freiburg in a few hours?
A few hours give you a first impression of the centre. The Abnoba tour allows around 2½ hours, including an hour’s guided walk.
Is the Schlossberg included in the tour?
It is not among the advertised stops. This suggestion is for an independent visit with enough time available.
